Agiorgitiko: The Greek Red Variety Merlot Lovers Should Try

You may not know how to pronounce Agiorgitiko yet, but there is a good chance you will enjoy drinking it.

Soft, fruit-forward and often beautifully smooth, Agiorgitiko is one of Greece’s most approachable red grape varieties. For international wine lovers, a useful place to start is with a familiar comparison:

If Merlot is your comfort-zone red, Agiorgitiko could be your next Greek discovery.

Agiorgitiko and Merlot: what do they have in common?

Agiorgitiko is not the “Greek Merlot”—it has its own character and identity. Still, the comparison can help you understand what to expect before your first glass.

Both varieties can produce welcoming wines with generous fruit and gentle tannins. Agiorgitiko, however, often shows a brighter red-fruit character and a fresh, spicy finish that gives it a distinctly Greek personality.

Why is Agiorgitiko connected to Nemea?

Although Agiorgitiko is grown in other parts of Greece, its spiritual and historical home is Nemea, in the northeastern Peloponnese.

Nemea is Greece’s largest Protected Designation of Origin zone for red wine. A red wine carrying the PDO Nemea designation must be produced entirely from Agiorgitiko grapes.

The landscape plays an important role in the wine’s personality. Across Nemea, differences in altitude, soil and microclimate allow the same grape to produce many expressions—from fresh and juicy wines to deeper, barrel-aged reds with ageing potential.

This versatility is one of the best reasons to explore more than one winery. At Domaine Skouras, visitors can discover a polished, modern expression of the variety, while Ktima Palivou, located in Ancient Nemea, offers another perspective from a family estate closely connected to the region and its vineyards.

Why is it called Agiorgitiko?

The name comes from Agios Georgios, meaning Saint George in Greek.

Until the early twentieth century, the town of Nemea was known as Agios Georgios. The local grape gradually became known as Agiorgitiko—the grape of Agios Georgios.

This is why you may occasionally see its name translated as “St. George” on wine labels outside Greece.

Part of the pleasure of exploring Agiorgitiko is seeing how differently each producer interprets it.

Larger and internationally established estates have helped introduce the grape to wine lovers around the world. At the same time, smaller producers such as Ieropoulos Family Winery offer visitors the opportunity to experience a more intimate side of Nemea’s winemaking culture.

Depending on the winery and winemaking style, you may taste a young Agiorgitiko filled with fresh cherry and raspberry aromas, or a richer wine with plum, sweet spices, vanilla and a more structured finish.

What should you eat with Agiorgitiko?

Agiorgitiko is an exceptionally food-friendly red. Try it with:

Fresher styles can also be served slightly cool, making them an enjoyable choice for a relaxed lunch or an outdoor summer dinner.

Your first step into Nemea

Agiorgitiko is easy to enjoy but offers plenty to explore. It combines the welcoming texture that many Merlot drinkers love with the freshness, fruit and character of one of Greece’s most important native grapes.
